What the Department looks at
- Your relationship is genuine and continuing, and you live together or do not live apart on a permanent basis.
- Your sponsor is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and meets the sponsor requirements.
- Evidence across four areas: financial aspects, the nature of your household, your social context and the nature of your commitment.
- You and your sponsor meet health and character requirements.

Common questions
Do I get permanent residence straight away?
No. Partner visas are normally two stages. A temporary visa comes first, and the permanent visa is assessed later. We explain the timing for your case.
Can I work while I wait?
Many onshore applicants are on a bridging visa with work rights, and the temporary partner visa also allows work. We confirm your conditions at your consultation.
What if our relationship is recent or long distance?
The Department looks at the whole relationship. We help you gather the strongest evidence of your commitment, and we are honest about the risks.
Prepare your evidence early
We review your relationship evidence before you lodge, so your application is complete and clear.
